General Terpene Info
Can terpenes be ingested?
Terpenes have been used as flavor ingredients and are safe to ingest when rated “Food Grade or GRAS”. “GRAS” is an acronym for the phrase Generally Recognized As Safe and refers to food additives.
While our terpenes can be safe to ingest, they must be diluted prior to use and should only be used by trained professionals. Refer to the specific SDS for details.
What levels of terpenes are safe for consumption?
All terpenes need to be handled as unique substances. Generalizations cannot be made about their consumption.
For our strain profiles we suggest a maximum of 10% by volume, starting at 5% and working your way up to the desired taste or effect.
When it comes to isolated terpenes you will need to seek professional advice if you are unsure of proper dosing protocol.
What are terpenes used for?
Terpenes have many different uses from food flavoring, to perfumery, to therapeutic uses. Find out more here.
How do you measure them?
Due to the fact that terpenes are very potent in their pure form, you must accurately measure them. We suggest using an adjustable pipette to convenient and accurate measuring. A pipette is a laboratory tool commonly used in chemistry, biology and medicine to transport a measured volume of liquid, often as a media dispenser. Some quality pipettes can be purchased here.
How do I store my terpenes?
In a cool dark place with the cap on. In the refrigerator if you have space and want to encourage the longevity of your terpenes.
I have pine allergies. Will I suffer allergic reactions if I use Alpha/Beta Pinene?
To date, no one has reported a sensitivity to our alpha pinene.
From what we understand, pine allergy is a pollen allergy mainly in the spring time when male trees drop pollen or a nut allergy (pine nuts like in pesto and other Mediterranean dishes).
Through the distillation of alpha & beta pinene, our terpene oils should have been separated from any traces of either of these two irritants. As with all natural products it is difficult to say that no reaction is possible with use but it is our opinion that those with a pine allergy should be able to use our Alpha Pinene when diluted as suggested after consulting their doctor about the use of pine oils.
Are your terpenes CANNABIS DERIVED?
No, our terpenes are extracted from many different natural plant sources. There are over 30,000 terpenes found in nature and each terpene can be found in multiple sources.
One benefit of doing it this way is to help ensure consistency of strain flavors as our ratios can be replicated precisely each time.
For example, alpha pinene extracted from pine trees is chemically identical to alpha pinene extracted from cannabis.
How are terpenes extracted?
Are the terpenes natural?
We strive to offer naturally derived terpenes whenever possible, but some cannot be sourced this way. Fortunately, synthetic molecules are identical to those sourced from nature, often with greater purity. We have found that most people have the definitions of synthetic and GMO mixed up and invite you to review their definitions below.
Our isolated terpenes will always be labeled on our website, indicating whether they are natural or synthetic. In an effort to make the most accurate representation of a terpene profile, True Terpenes may use synthetic terpenes in our strain blends.
We certify that the terpenes on this site which are declared natural; meets the criteria of Naturalness as defined in Section 101.22 (a) (3) of Title 21 of the United States Code of Federal Regulations.
We certify that the product meets the following criteria:
- Does not contain any artificial flavors
- Is not adulterated or misbranded according to Food and Drug laws
Natural: existing in or caused by nature; not made or caused by humankind.
Synthetic: compounds formed through a chemical process by human design to mimic nature
GMO: an organism whose genetic material has been altered by means of genetic engineering and is not found naturally.
Are the terpenes Food Grade?
Yes. We certify that the flavor or ingredient is FDA/FEMA GRAS. We would like to assure you that we use only flavor ingredients that are listed as being generally recognized as safe (GRAS) on a reliable published industry association (FEMA) list and/or are approved for use in a regulation of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. We hereby certify that this flavor or ingredient is safe for its intended use in food. We may terminate this certification at any time upon written notice in which this certification shall be null and void as to any material supplied after termination of the certification.
Are the terpenes organic?
We declare that the terpenes meet the requirements for non-agricultural (non-organic) substances allowed as ingredients in or on processed products labeled as “organic” or “made with organic (specified ingredients or food group(s))” [7 CFR 205.605(a)(9)].
To qualify to be “USDA Certified Organic”, a product must be considered “agricultural”. In other words, something you can grow and eat.
Once a terpene is extracted from a plant it is no longer considered to be “agricultural” and therefore cannot be classified as “USDA Certified Organic” but it IS organic compliant and is an FDA approved natural product.
The non-agricultural standard for “organic” means that there were no outside or synthetic solvents or chemicals used in the making and extraction.
All of the flavor constituents in our products meet the FDA definition of a natural flavor.
Are the terpenes Non-GMO?
Yes. We declare that the terpenes are not derived from or produced using genetically modified organisms or their derivatives.
Do they contain solvents?
Keep in mind, terpenes themselves can act as solvents to many other substances. Over time, through exposure to heat, oxygen, and UV, terpenes can degrade and be found to contain trace amounts of other organic solvents like acetone.
These trace amounts should be noted and accounted for, but are not cause for alarm of disposal of product.
A thought: 1 gallon of terpenes with a solvent detected at 100 PPM contains only 37.85mg of total solvent across 3,785ml, which is only 10mg/L (or 0.3mg/oz), and at a dilution of even 20%, only 0.06mg/g of concentrate.
If this was methanol for instance, that would come in at about 33 times less than the daily allowable dose by the FDA before it is deemed toxic.
What certifications do they have?
Our terpenes are certified organic, natural, non-gmo and food grade.
Do your products contain Diacetyl?
Our products do not contain Diacetyl.
What's with all these crazy warnings and disclaimers?
Our terpenes are of an EXTREMELY high purity. This is important when considering why they are labeled with such insane warnings such as “do not inhale, do not ingest, do not even look at them”.
When in this pure of a form, terpenes ARE DANGEROUS and must be handled with the utmost care for your own safety, BUT once diluted properly, they are very safe to ingest, smell, eat, whatever.
Why do your terpenes seem more dangerous than those from other companies?
Short version: All terpenes of this high purity MUST SHOW these warnings, legally and morally.
If you see terpenes for sale somewhere that does not show these scary warnings, one of two things is occurring:
1) The product is NOT high enough purity to warrant a legal warning (when diluted, terpenes are safe enough to ingest and do not need warnings)
2) The company is in violation by not displaying the proper safety information to you. Proceed at your own risk!
What is the difference between strain profiles and isolated terpenes?
Isolated terpenes are single terpenes. The strain profiles are mixtures of our isolated terpenes, blended to resemble popular cannabis strain profiles.
How close are your strain profiles to actual cannabis profiles?
We use the terpenes found in the greatest quantities, which might make up on average 90+% of the profile. However, the remaining 10% might be made up of 100 different terpenes found in small quantities. We use 30-50 terpenes per bottle of strain profile on average.
Why does the COA for the strain profile not add up to 100%?
SC Labs only tests for 37 terpenes. In blending our profiles we use additional terpenes that they are unable to detect.
Your isolates are not 100% pure terpene, what is the other percentage?
It’s other terpene isomers and aromatics such as asters, esters, aldehydes, ketones, and alcohols.
What makes your terpenes better than the competition?
We are the largest supplier of terpenes in the industry. Meaning that most of our competitors purchase some of their terpenes from us. What it really comes down to for our company is that we we offer the best customer service in the cannabis industry and custom blends which our clients say taste better and offer a greater effect that those sold by our competitors.
Mixing and DIY
What percentage should I mix in?
We suggest starting at 1% by volume and work up from there.
1% – 5% is usually the sweet-spot.
1ml = 36 drops
to get a proper mix at 1% for a yield of 10ml:
9.9ml of base + 0.1ml (1%) of True Terpenes (or 2 drops)
|30ml (1oz) yield
(Terpenes + Base)
(Terpenes + Base)
(Terpenes + Base)
Should I use heat to help with the mixing?
YES. When it comes to combining liquids, heat is your friend.
The actual temperature varies depending on what substance you are mixing into, but a general rule is that you should not exceed 100C.
You’ll know if the mixing is going properly when the liquids look like ONE consistent color instead of two.
Which terpenes best emulsify an oil?
We suggest using a homogenizer when mixing the terpenes and certain oils. Limonene can also be used as an emulsifying agent.
We can’t give any specific information on each terpene because every oil is different as well.
Will freezing terpenes damage them?
Short answer: no
Longer version: If you want to freeze terpenes in a normal freezer, it will not damage them. It would take a temperature much much lower than that to pull terpenes out of a mixture.
What is the best option to cut terpene concentrates?
We suggest our proprietary blend of flavorless, odorless terpenes known as VISCOSITY Extract Liquifier.
VISCOSITY Extract Liquifier
I thought all terpenes had scent and flavor?
You might of heard that terpenes are the smell and flavor of cannabis; which is MOSTLY true, however it is not ALWAYS true. Some terpenes are highly aromatic, meaning they produce a great deal of scent and flavor, while others are nearly odorless.
To create VISCOSITY Extract Liquifier we combined essentially odorless terpenes into a blend which has virtually no scent or flavor, and promotes a calming effect.
What kind of extracts does VISCOSITY work with?
While we have had success with just about every kind of extract with enough trial and error, VISCOSITY was designed to be combined with winterized extracts; meaning those which have had the the majority of the lipids (fats) and waxes removed. Generally winterized extracts include distillate and post processed (finished/polished) CO2.
As a rule of thumb, if an extract is not transparent it likely contains a high content of lipids and waxes and other phytochemistry which can separate when a high content of terpenes is added. If your extract separates, it is not ruined. Though you may want to consume it using another method such as capsules, tincture, or topical application.
DISTILLATE: Best use.
CO2: Best use.
What extracts should I avoid using with VISCOSITY?
VISCOSITY acts as a true diluent, not a carrier(Base). Meaning it will dissolve into your extract and force separation of non-soluble components.
If you choose to use VISCOSITY with unwinterized extracts you may do so and find great success, however if it does not turn out as you would have hoped, we cannot offer any form of compensation as you have been informed.
While many clients have had success using VISCOSITY with raw CO2, BHO, Rosin, and other unwinterized extracts, we cannot say that we recommend using VISCOSITY with these products because each extraction is unique and contains a varying content of lipids and waxes and other plant constituents which are not oil soluble and may separate and cloud your final product.
Can I use VISCOSITY with CBD?
When working with CBD isolate, it is important to know that terpenes (including VISCOSITY Extract Liquifier) WILL NOT dissolve crystallized CBD into a vapeable solution. Generally this includes CBD oils, distillate, and isolate.
How much VISCOSITY can I use with my extracts?
VISCOSITY is a new product formulation which has yet to meet it’s full potential when it comes to testing it’s limits. We suggest that you start with 5-10% by total volume and work up from there as needed.
Try our mixing calculator for exact measurements.
What is VISCOSITY made of?
A proprietary blend of virtually odorless, tasteless terpenes. No shenanigans, wordplay, marketing gimmicks, or Tom-foolery. Seriously, we only use terpenes.
How is VISCOSITY different from other diluents or carriers?
Unlike other additives on the market which act as carriers (base), VISCOSITY is truly a diluent meaning that it dissolves INTO your extract and thins it; allowing you to use as little additive as possible to achieve your desired thickness.
In comparison, most additives carry extracts, meaning that you add a quantity of extract to your substance of choice and the extract dissolves into the carrier. Carriers require that you cut your extract significantly in order to achieve suspension and the desired thickness.
The most common carriers are MCT, PG, and PEG; all of which have been shown to degrade and produce hazardous byproducts when exposed to heat.
Carrier (Base): a substance used to support or deliver another substance
Diluent: a substance which makes another substance thinner
Can I use VISCOSITY as a base liquid?
While VISCOSITY Extract Liquifier is an excellent option for diluting the flavor of terpenes when combined with extracts. We do not recommend combining True Terpene Profiles or Isolates with VISCOSITY Extract Liquifier to be consumed without the addition of plant extracts. We suggest a maximum of 10% added terpenes (which includes VISCOSITY Extract Liquifier) in a product.
Do you sell larger sizes?
Do you sell sample sizes?
Do you have a showroom or storefront?
We have a manufacturing facility where local orders can be picked up. However, generally there are no product experts available to discuss your order at the time of pickup.
For clients looking to make large orders (>$1,500) an appointment can be made to observe the products before making an order. For smaller orders we suggest purchasing a custom sample pack.

There is no minimum order for profiles.
If you do not see your country as an option at checkout, contact us via LiveChat or our contact form.
Australia: Currently we do not ship any of our products.
South Africa: Currently we only ship our strain profiles.
Israel: Currently we only ship our strain profiles.
How long does it take to receive my terpenes?
Many factors contribute to the shipping and handling times, but a general guide is:
- US: 3 business days
- International: 4 business days
- Continental US: 3-5 business days
- AK and HI: 5-10 business days
- International: 5-10 business days
Which carrier do you ship with?
We primarily ship with UPS and have a CFR 49 hazardous materials endorsement. We have the ability to ship any size container in full compliance with the DOT.
Some of our orders ship via USPS.
Why aren’t there options for shipping?
If you need your order faster than standard shipping allows please let us know and we will do our best to accommodate.
Why does international shipping cost so dang much???
Terpenes are hazardous. There are many extra precautions and steps that must be taken to ship these products and even more so when shipping internationally. We have a trained staff that have taken special classes and passed special tests to allow us to even be able to ship our products, and a second, even more specialized class to ship hazardous materials internationally. We’re not bragging by saying this, just explaining how much is involved.
Unfortunately, there are minimum allowable shipping methods to ship hazardous materials internationally, and they aren’t cheap.
SMALL BOTTLE LARGE SHIPPING COST?
Some of our products come in the smallest bottles, so why is it still so much to ship? Well this is because despite the small bottles, there is a LOT of packaging to ensure that there is no breakage or leaking during transit. This extra packaging material prevents us from putting these small bottles in a small box. You’ll see when your package arrives, we don’t skimp on packaging.
Why do you require a $1,000 minimum to Hawaii and Alaska for isolates?
When we ship to Hawaii or Alaska (or anywhere by air) we are required to take extra precautions because isolated terpenes are considered hazardous goods. This extra time, attention, and shipping cost has lead us to put a minimum on orders.
If you would like to purchase pre-mixed strain profiles there is no minimum order, as once terpenes are blended they are considered less hazardous.
UPS contacted me saying I need a shipping broker? (For Canada Orders)
While we do all we can to make sure you easily receive you package, sometimes UPS will request you designate a broker for importing your package.
If this is the case, you can simply choose to have UPS as your broker or you can consider any from this list provided by the Canadian government.
All sales are final. Orders can be refunded prior to fulfillment and shipping but once the order has been fulfilled and/or shipped, no refunds will be issued.
