Hello! In our last blog post, we discussed some of the dangers of stress and the negative impact it can have on our bodies. These included heart problems, developing more frequent colds, memory loss, increased stroke risk and increased depression. However, by combating stress with smart relaxation techniques, we can help protect our health. Today, we would like to discuss several more ways stress can harm your body, as well as some of our favorite ways to unwind.
Stress is entirely normal and natural to have from time to time, but we should certainly be concerned about chronic stress and unhealthy coping mechanisms. By choosing a healthy diet and getting enough exercise, sleep, and nutrients, we have a good chance of alleviating some of these issues. However, if you are looking for an additional calming aid, why not try True Terpenes? We have terpene oils designed to help you relax. Read on to learn more about the ways that stress prevention can help your body.
Better Decision Making
Those who are under more stress than they should be under are less likely to make a good decision. In fact, a 2012 study showed that stress actually impacts the ways in which we measure possible risks and reward. We may be less likely to make proper and smart decisions when under a lot of pressure.
What’s strange is, stressed people tend to focus on the positive more than the negative, meaning that they are much less likely to think about the drawbacks of their future decisions. This may help explain why alcoholics want a drink more when they are under pressure, as they are less able to resist the “reward” feeling they get from a drink.
While everyone loves a good treat from time to time, many people gravitate towards foods that are high in sugar and bad fats. This can lead to increased weight gain, which no one wants! Stress makes it harder to resist these fattening and unhealthy foods. In fact, our cortisol levels (or, our stress hormone levels) cause us to feel hungrier and reach for the pantry when we may not even be all that hungry. Cortisol also has a tendency to mostly encourage junk food cravings.
Unfortunately, stress acne can cause a little bit of a vicious cycle. If you are stressed about an upcoming promotion decision at work, it may cause you to break out. Then, you are stressed about the breakout! Researchers are not sure why this happens, but stress increases the amount of oil our skin produces. This leads to clogged pores and acne. However, acne isn’t the only skin problem that pops up when we’re stressed. You may also struggle with psoriasis. There is hope, though! A 1998 study found that psoriasis plaques clear up quickly for people who meditate often.
Improved Sex Drive
Women tend to feel their sex drive lower because they are stressed. It happens to men, too. In fact, stress hurts about 30 percent of men’s libido. Men are more likely to see sex as a stress reliever, but for women, their partner’s desire is just another demand on their energy and time. By carving time aside for relaxation, neither partner will see an issue with their libido.
Slow Breast Cancer Development
While relaxing cannot cure breast cancer, it has been shown to help slow down the disease. It can also speed up recovery time. If you are cancer-free currently, a study in 2003 found that those who are stressed may be twice as likely to develop breast cancer later on. Try your best to relax to prevent this from happening!
Of course, stress relief is much more than trying terpenes, so do your best to focus on keeping all areas of your life healthy. We recommend getting proper sleep, nutrients, and taking care of yourself however you need to do so.
